Floriferous Ideas: Hunkering Down and Decompressing.
Stock up on movie snacks, create the perfect den and hunker down to watch a cosy film.
A couple of years ago I escaped to the most beautiful little cosy cabin in the countryside. It was an unplugged, disconnected, cosy escape and I dream about returning there again one day.
Autumn and Winter are the perfect seasons for slowing down, wearing your favourite woolly pulleys and hibernating (especially after a busy week at work). As an introvert by the end the working week or sometimes day… I am often in need of time alone to decompress - or hibernate at home and manifest cosy, countryside cabin vibes.
Here are some of my favourite comfort films to watch on those days where you just want to hide away from the world:
One Fine Day - heartwarming, classically 90’s, contains many cats and Maggie has the cutest cat rucksack - Remember those absolute gems?!
Pride and Prejudice - the 2005 film. The landscapes combined with the wonderful soundtrack composed by Dario Marianelli makes this a classic comfort film.
One of my favourite scenes is where the seasons slowly change as Elizabeth sits on the swing in the garden 🤌🏻
Sleepless in Seattle - 90’s Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks rom com needs no justification. However the star of the film for me is Jessica. I will never tire of Jessica’s attitude, I especially adore it when she asks Jonah if she should tell the airport staff he’s short for his age, but that they shouldn’t say anything as it will hurt his feelings - relatable, everyone needs a friend like Jessica!
The Goonies - One of my favourite escapist films! Watching this as a child meant every millennial holds the teeniest, tiniest bit of hope that upon venturing to the dreaded loft, you find a treasure map and go on an adventure with your best friends…Am i right?!
About Time - A lovely, heartwarming film that reminds you to treasure every moment in life (and may be just the boost you need to leave the cosy den). It will make you laugh out loud and make you wish you could escape to a beautiful house overlooking a quiet, scenic, sandy beach in Cornwall.
The Mighty Ducks - a Disney classic that will never fail to make you smile. This is especially good for when you need motivation to be brave…or when you have Sunday Scaries…tuck yourself in and wrap up in the blanket of cosy, 90’s nostalgia.
Little Women - it’s a lovely adaptation, with a wonderful cast and a beautiful soundtrack. It leaves you with an uplifting and wholesome feeling with a quiet determination to never give up on your future aspirations.
Ferris Beuller’s Day Off - aside from strongly relating to Cameron’s need for self preservation and hibernation - this film has everything…Adventure, a great soundtrack and alllllll of the 80s outfits. I secretly covet this leopard print quilted waistcoat from Damson Madder, and imagine myself looking chic (unlikely- not brave enough to pull this outfit off!) whilst humming along to Danke Schoen and channeling what I can only describe as ‘Big Ferris Energy’. (You heard it here first!) The Met gallery scene with the instrumental version of Please, Please, Please by The Smiths is probably one of my favourite movie moments.
I would love to hear about your comfort movie recommendations!
